Orvis Langland
|
| Bio: The sea, the ships and the shores have been calling to Orvis Langland for many years. When Orvis began painting there was no question about the subject matter for his work. He chose to paint ships. Included in Orvis's paintings are ships of all kinds, however, his greatest love is to paint 19th century clipper ships. When it comes to the philosophical aspects of his work, Orvis's love of ships extends to the feel of the wood and the shape of the curves. And as for his love of the sea, he can talk about the mystical aspects, the beauty of the ships and the powerful pull of the ocean. |

| The clipper ship was a fast slender sailing vessel developed in the United States in the mid 1800's. The Name "Clipper" came from the way the ships "clipped" off the miles. The British began building clipper ships a few years after the Americans. The graceful clipper ships were replaced in the late 1800's by Square-Riggers which were ships designed to carry large cargoes at slower speeds. |
